A good moment to think about mindfulness.

Give yourself a New Year resolution to develop your mindfulness muscles!

A good moment to think about mindfulness.

6 mindfulness tips to help you get started:

  1. Eat and drink mindfully. Remember this phrase: When you eat, eat. When you drink, drink. In other words, avoid distractions when you sit down to a meal, a coffee or a smoothie. Simply focus all of your attention on what is in front of you and the smell and taste and how it feels as you eat or drink.

  2. Connect with your senses. Your senses - touch, smell, taste, sound and sight - are your gateway into the present moment. But when you are lost in thought, you don't fully experience your senses and what they are telling you about the world around you. Literally wake up and smell the coffee! Pay attention to the sounds and sights around you. Be aware of how your clothing feels against your body. The grass under your feet. The sensation of warm water on your hands as you do the washing up. Even mundane activities can bring a pleasing sense of being connected in the moment.

  3. Observe your breathing. Your breathing occurs naturally and rhythmically. When you pay attention to it, you momentarily free yourself from your churning thoughts, worries and anxieties. Choose one location to focus on like your nostrils, your lungs or your diaphragm.

  4. Pause for a moment before you do something, in order to focus on the action. Pause before you switch on the light and pay attention to how it illuminates the room. Pause and listen to the sound of the phone ringing before you answer it. You can apply this principle to anything you do throughout the day. Mini pauses between actions can improve concentration and tether you to the here and now as you stop for a moment and become aware of what you are doing. How often have you closed the front door and then wondered later if you locked it?

  5. Listen attentively. We often don’t truly listen to people when they are speaking to us, because we're too busy planning what to say next, judging what they are saying, or simply losing our concentration. Next time you're in a conversation, make it your goal to fully listen to what the other person is saying to you, without getting lost in your own thoughts.

  6. Set a daily reminder on your Moodlapse app to help you to feel calmer and improve concentration over time. Focus on both creating and watching the beautiful animated mandala patterns and enjoy some 'me' time to gather yourself, refocus and relax.

Check your progress using the in-app bar chart tool and integrate with your Apple Health app to track your mindful minutes.
